Candlelight Service – Order of Worship December 24, 2020

Introduction

Advent Prelude: Away in a Manger

Welcome

Call To Worship:
L: The Star over Bethlehem is God’s sign of peace to all of humanity.
P: We welcome the arrival of the Prince of Peace in our midst.
L: The baby born to a poor peasant girl is God’s gift of love. Christ came into this world; he lived and died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love toward us.
P: Oh come all ye faithful. Joyful and Triumphant.
All: Come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Choral Response to the Call: O Come All Ye Faithful

Opening Prayer:

Gracious LORD, be the God of our Christmas celebration. We rejoice with the shepherds over the good news of Jesus’ birth. We join in the praises of the angelic choir, saying: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom God favors!”

Almighty God, you have favored us with the greatest gift ever given–your only begotten Son, light of true light, God of true God. May we never take this your gift for granted; may our songs of praise never fade, and may we treasure it in our hearts always and forever. Bless all of us here gathered in worship as well as our loved ones at home. May peace and joy ring in our hearts and reverberate through our communities tonight in the name of Jesus the new-born King. Amen.

Lighting the Christ Candle:

A warm glow spreads throughout our world declaring that God is with us. The light which extends from the farthest reaches of our earth to the neighbor next door alerts us that we are not alone throughout these long winter nights.

Tonight we proclaim the hope that inspires us to keep moving forward on our journeys. We recognize the peace that extends from our souls into the world. We celebrate the joy that fills our spirits with excitement. And we herald the love passed between Christ and us and between our neighbors and us.

As the Christ Candle is kindled, we celebrate the compassion which will overcome hatred and the kindness which will overcome isolation.

Let Us Pray: Lord, may the light seen tonight fill our soul, inform our lives, enliven our spirits and bring
revival to our weary souls. Amen.

Song: In the Bleak Midwinter

Introduction of our Children and Youth in Celebration of our Savior’s Birth

Isaiah 9:6-9-7 – Aidan

Away in a Manger – Lily

Song Was Heard at Christmas by Timothy Dudley-Smith – Bryson

Blessing of a Manger Scene – Diane and TJ

God of every nation and people,
From the beginning of creation you have made manifest your love.
When our need for a Savior was great
You sent your Son to be born of the virgin Mary.
To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.
Lord, bless all who look upon this manger.
May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus,
And raise up our thoughts to him,
Who is God-with-us and Savior of all,
And who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Special: O Holy Night

Sermon: What Christmas Is All About

Candle Lighting:

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

We are filled with joy for we have heard good news of great joy. We are filled with love for we have tasted the sign of God’s great love. We are filled with hope for the angels still sing in our world and there is a Light for us to follow.

Let us go from this place proclaiming
that we have seen the glory of God
Believing that there is a light that shines in the darkness
Which the darkness shall not overcome

And may the love of the Creator
The joy of the Spirit
And the peace of the Christ-child
Be with you this Christmas, and evermore
Amen
