Prayer of Illumination
Let us pray: God of all goodness, we delight in this time of worship. Help us focus once more on the amazing gift you’ve given the world in the birth of Jesus. We open ourselves to you, trusting that you created us for joy-filled hearts and lives. Show us the creative power you bring to our beings. Our strength and hope comes from you. Our joy in your truth cannot be contained – it must be shared. As we worship and hear your World proclaimed, prepare our hearts to be transformed by you that we may walk in the glorious light of Christ where we live and give witness to our faith. Amen

Lighting the Christ Candle

John 1: 5 reminds us that, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Jesus – born in a stable – raised to be our teacher and Lord – crucified for our sins and raised for our salvation is our true light.

Let us Pray: As we light the Christ Candle we remember we remember and give thanks for the light Christ the Son brought into the world when he was born a little baby, God in the flesh – Savior of the World. Lord, be with us as we celebrate your holy truth. Make us ever mindful and thankful. Amen

Prayers of the People

Pastor: We adore you, Savior God, Root of Jesse, Ruler of Nations, Newborn King.

People: Come, let us adore him!

Pastor: We give thanks for the star that led us to this long-awaited hope and the season of Advent that prepared us for your extraordinary birth.

People: Come, let us adore him! We adore you, Savior God, born fragile, vulnerable and human.

Pastor: We pray for those most vulnerable in our society: the sick, the marginalized, the abused, the poor and homeless. We pray for those who are bone-weary from work, those who feel helpless and hopeless. Empower and encourage them by your Spirit, O God.

People: Come, let us adore him. We adore you, Savior God, for being with us in the flesh, for entering our world and experiencing our humanity, for redeeming and sustaining us in each and every moment.

Pastor: Prince of Peace to heal us and guide us in your holy path of love, hope, peace and joy that can only be found in Christ.

People: Lord, hear our prayers and guide our way. May we bring glory to your kingdom and we witness to your truth.

Pastor: Hear our prayers as we pray for Alexander Chapel UMC. Protect, lead and guide us to carry out the mission you have for this church. People: Grant our leaders your wisdom as they lead the church.

People: Care for our pastors grant them your wisdom, care and protection. We pray for those around the world who are persecuted for their faith. Lord, be their source of strength and perseverance. May they know the power of your presence.

Pastor: Be with those lifted up on the prayer chain. The needs of those upon our hearts and for all you are grieving many kinds of loss.

People: Hear our prayers for America as we pray for national revival. Guide our leaders at every level of government to seek your ways. We pray for your healing and an end to covid around the world. For all who serve for our safety, we ask you to care for them and their families as only you can.

Pastor: We adore you, Savior God, for the way you came and continue to come in mystery and in might. You enter our world, our joy and our pain, making our hearts burn with thanksgiving.
May our lives be gifts of praise to you. May our Christmas joy turn us towards each other with compassion and respect.

People: May we clothe ourselves in dignity and love each other as you love us. Holy and astounding God, we have seen the reflection of your glory and celebrated your love born again. Help us bear witness to Christ in our lives and in our prayers.

Pastor: We lift up the message Bishop Carter is bringing us today. Holy Spirit, touch and transform our heart in the hearing and receiving of your word for us today. Finally, hear us now, as we pray the prayer Christ taught us by
saying together – The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.
