A Thanksgiving Communion Liturgy
The Great Thanksgiving
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: Let us give thanks to our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Leader: Lord, we come to this table with thankful hearts.
People: Why do we give thanks at this table?
Leader: We give thanks because God has invited us here! All God’s children are invited to the Lord’s supper. We come humbly to the table, knowing that we have not earned our way here, but are invited guests at this feast of love.
People: Why do we eat at this table?
Leader: We eat at this table to remember that on the night before Jesus died, he ate with his friends. Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them saying, “Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Each time you do this, remember me.”
People: God of grace, we pray asking you to give us repentant hearts, forgiving hearts, clean hearts. With thanksgiving we come to your table. Send your Spirit upon us so that we know that all who eat and drink in this room and around the world are one body, one holy people, giving thanks to you in an endless song of praise.
Leader: Thanks be to you Lord Jesus Christ, who gave your life freely for our salvation.
(The bread is raised )
People: Why do we take the cup at this table?
Leader: We drink because that same night Jesus also took a cup, and after giving thanks, passed it to his friends saying, “Drink this cup. This cup, poured out for you, is the promise of God. Whenever you drink it, remember me.”
(The cup is raised)
People: Thanks be to you Lord Jesus Christ, who gave your life freely for our salvation.
Leader: Our presence at this communion table is a sign. Here we remember the gift that is Jesus; the gift of his birth, his life and his death on the cross. At this table we celebrate Christ’s resurrection. We remember that we are waiting in hope to see Jesus again.
And so, in remembrance of these mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Leader: By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.
Lord hear us as we pray the prayer Jesus taught us:
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Leader: Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ.
The table of the United Methodist Church invites all who are earnestly seeking Christ to come to his table. All is made ready. You are invited to come.
Closing Prayer
Leader: O Jesus, our beloved, we give you thanks for inviting us to your table and sharing your feast. May we know that we have been fed with love and grace, and may we follow you out in the world, ambassadors of your hope and peace. Amen.
Benediction
